Bridge Layout
Modern Passenger Vessels require a lot of work to be operated in a good manner!
In studies of several accidents and incidents with Passenger Vessels, a high workload on the bridge was named as a contributing factor.
Bad ergonomics increases workload, therefore bridge layout is very important.
Changing an existing ship is not cost effective. However, adjusting the design of a new build Ship is.
The proposed layout change by Shipdesign, will typically reduce the amount of consoles and equipment placed on the bridge. Increasing ergonomics and reducing cost.

Risk Assessment
Shipdesign will analyse your ship and the operational area. We will provide compact solutions for the most likely Emergency events. These most likely events, can than also be used for training and checking in the simulator.

Procedure Development
Shipdesign will devellop procedures wich are Airline Industrie based.
Procedures are a support for the crew. They are compact and easy to use. The crew will enjoy working with them.

A checklist should only contain the critical items for a certain part of the voyage. Less critical items are considered to be ready knowledge and are done by heart.

A checklist should not contain more than 10 items.
The system will only work with professionals and is also focussed on future legal challenges.
The system uses the voyage data recorder and de bridge voice recorder to document.
This reduces paperwork/workload significantly.

Crew Concept
Crew concept will help two individuals reach a higher level than they would as an individual.
Human factors are important factors. All of them will be addressed.
The background of most Officers is based on a single handed watch.

There are many phases of voyage, where a crew of more officers is assigned to the bridge.

A clearly designed Crew Concept will help individual officers to know what to do and say and when. With the use of a Crew Concept, we create a well balanced and happy team. 1+1=3

With a good Crew Concept a Crew Recource Management training becomes more effective and structured.

Crew Training and Assessment
Train as you Operate and Operate as you Train.
Operate by the book, it’s the best and the easiest way to operate.
With a good reason you can always depart from procedures.
This should be, however, an occasional event.

Crew training can only function properly by using a general Assessment Method.
The data derived by this assessment method will be filed for future use. It can aid to analyse future events.
Shipdesign will help develop a useful Assessment Method based on Airline Industry Standards.

By using standard, non normal/emergency events. The crew is trained and analysed.

Updates and Follow Up
Procedures will need to be updated regularly. (monthly) This way, the procedures will further improve with time. Shipdesign will help develop an update system; this will be done within your company.

The source will have to be in a special department within your shore based office. Procedures will be the same on all Vessels. This will make shorter work-in periods for new crew possible.

An occasional check by Shipdesign is desirable. Shipdesign can also do Audits.
